Grow Into Poetry Prompts

🌱 Seeded by CJB today

I have to shine some 🌞 sunlight first on #vss365! Why? Because — well, THIS POST explains all that. Let’s just dig straight into the softest soil so you can start growing something you love — today!

Poetry has always been something I loved. But for a long time, like many of us, I pushed it to the back burner. I thought poetry was something other people did — “real” poets, people trained in it — not me.

Fast forward 50 years. I stumbled across the prompt #vss365 on Twitter (or should I say “X” — nah, I still prefer Twitter). The community, the standard, and the sheer range of poetry there reignited my love for the art. It sent me into the poetic stratosphere.

But more than anything, it woke me up. It reminded me to write without fear. It opened the doors of my creativity. CJB grew not just from my old blogging habits (and yes, my name), but from a unified love of words.

When you look at what people share on the #vss365 timeline, and you really read between the lines, that’s where real life exists. There’s no pretentiousness — just words grown deep-down, shown honestly. It’s a privilege to read them.

So what I’m clumsily trying to say here is this: grab a poetry prompt. Express yourself in any way you want. It doesn’t have to be about feelings — it can be thoughts, ideas, randomness, dreams. Poetry has no limits. Surprise people. Surprise yourself. I know I did.

Honestly, I never imagined how much my poetry would baffle people. But in that bafflement came a lesson: everybody is unique. Everybody has their own perspective. And when it comes to poetry, everything is beautiful — TODAY!

So, let’s get you into some writing prompts. If you’re like me, even after a year or two in the game, it can still be hard to know where to start. That’s why I pulled this list together. Hopefully it helps you dive straight into poetry.

Poetry Prompt Hashtags 🌱

*Note, if the main # creator account is known I have linked it.

  • #3WordsPoet: A prompt where poets craft pieces using exactly three words, often paired with other hashtags like #vss365 or #haiku. Popular for its minimalist challenge.
  • #15WordPoet: A prompt where poets craft pieces using exactly 15 words, offering a slightly longer format than #PoetryIn13 but still concise.
  • #BraveWrite: A prompt encouraging bold, fearless writing, often used for poetry or short prose. Less structured but great for emotionally charged or daring pieces.
#Creating365: 🌱 You know what! After researching and writing this post, I’ve realized the tag #Creating365 needs to be globally defibrillated! Why? Because there’s no writing or poetry prompt out there that simply lets you just… create anything (YES — EVEN THE ABOVE VIDEO!!). I have also been using a blog #tag HERE on to encourage me to keep creating daily — okay, yes, sometimes I miss a day (or two) — but it works. Basically, it’s a great little soul-spark ✨ to keep you growing today! And if you want to dig deeper, I even wrote a whole seed about it HERE!!
  • #FoxProse: A creative prompt used for poetic or prose responses, often paired with #vss365.
  • #FromOneLine: Where can we go with just one connecting #prompt line? #FromOneLine hosted by @megwaf.
  • #HaikuChallenge: A daily or regular prompt encouraging haiku (5-7-5). Popular with poets focusing on nature, seasons, or concise imagery.
  • #InkMine: A prompt focused on evocative single-word inspiration, often used for poetry or micro-fiction. Frequently combined with #vss365 or #haiku.
  • #Only8Words: A prompt limiting poems to eight words, encouraging brevity and precision. Often paired with other hashtags for compact, powerful work.
  • #OurPoetryX: A community-driven hashtag for sharing poetry, sometimes tied to specific prompts or themes, fostering poet-to-poet engagement.
  • #PoetryIn13: A prompt challenging writers to create poetry using exactly 13 words. Strict, concise, and impactful.

  • #WriteMap: A prompt designed to inspire creative writing, often used to map out ideas or emotions in concise forms.

And hey — if you know of any hashtags I’ve missed, please tell me (social buttons below). And if I’ve got something wrong, correct me! This is a community garden — we grow together.

Right. Gotta grow! 🌱
